: I wouldlike to know where Stoick sleeps. Hiccup has the loft, but what about him? Or as of now, where would his mom sleep? Is there a back room I didn't notice in the show?

dyannehs:

nefertsukia:

Stoick doesn’t sleep because he’s a Viking Chief and he’s too hardcore.

Kidding. Well, they seem to be a bit different from the “actual” Vikings, so we have to sort of go for what we saw rather than actual cultural facts. (although I am sure dyannehs spoke of Viking dwellings before but i’m a little fuzzy at the moment) I think Vikings seldom had houses with actual divided rooms? They’d just pile on one general area. But people with more power could afford better houses.

I would suppose there is some sort of division in the house for Stoick. Would make sense for the Chief to have his own bedchamber. That, or he has the bed right in the living room (like Hiccup’s by the end of HTTYD, but off to a corner).  In any case, there’s Snotlout —whose house has a basement. Maybe that’s where Stoick sleeps, and/or stores things? (not Snotlout’s basement, but one in the Haddock house XD) In HTTYD we see the Haddock Household has a back door from where Hiccup wiggles out, so it’s possible the living room is just one large division, with the loft over it, and under the stairs to the loft (or  some place adequate) is the access to Stoick’s room.

A cool ‘dungeon’ bedroom. Hurr.

After HTTYD2 the house might need some rebuilding, so who knows? Valka probably isn’t even accustomed to sleeping in a bed. She probably wants to snuggle up with Cloudjumper, now and then. Wouldn’t find it unlikely if she built a comfortable cottage/something for him, and wound up staying there more often than not,or going out there at night. For comfort within familiarity.

Just rambling,though.

Houses.

There were sometimes separate rooms, depending on status and wealth.  Farmers could easily afford to build and often did have several rooms.  The master of the house and his wife typically had their own bedroom, and everyone else slept either in the main room or the loft.  Houses also had cellars for storage, dairies, outbuildings, larders, steam baths, and all sorts of additions depending on wealth and necessity.

Berkian houses actually resemble Viking homes in places where wood was common.
